Build your own smart solar tracker that automatically follows the brightest light using an Arduino Nano, four LDR sensors, stepper motors, and 3D-printed components!
In this DIY project, I’ll show you how to build a fully functional dual-axis solar tracking system that can move horizontally and vertically to adjust the position of a solar panel.
The project combines 3D printing, Arduino programming, electronics, and solar energy into one exciting build. It also includes a solar charging system for 3.7V Li-ion batteries and a regulated 5V output for compatible USB-powered devices.
Whether you’re interested in Arduino, renewable energy, or creative 3D printing projects, this tutorial will guide you through the complete process.
How Does the Dual-Axis Solar Tracker Work?
The solar tracker uses four GL5528 light-dependent resistors (LDRs) to detect differences in light intensity.
The Arduino Nano continuously compares the sensor readings and controls two 28BYJ-48 stepper motors through ULN2003 motor driver boards.
One motor adjusts the horizontal position, while the second controls the vertical angle, allowing the solar panel to follow changes in the direction of the strongest light.
The system also incorporates a DD05CVSA charging and boost module, enabling solar-powered battery charging and providing a 5V output.

Important Setup Notes
Before powering on the system, position the solar panel and LDR sensor holder as demonstrated in the tutorial.
The initial position is used as the starting reference, and the horizontal movement is limited to 180°.
Ensure the motor connections, power supply, battery polarity, and charging module specifications are correct before operating the system.
