How to Turn Any Image into a 3D Printable Model – Step-by-Step Tutorial

Share

Transform your favorite images, drawings, and designs into real 3D-printed objects using Inkscape, SOLIDWORKS, and Bambu Studio!

Have you ever wanted to turn a simple picture, logo, or decorative design into something you can actually 3D print?

In this step-by-step tutorial, I’ll show you how to convert a regular 2D image into a 3D-printable model, starting with vector tracing in Inkscape and finishing with a physical 3D print.

You’ll learn how to convert images into vector graphics, export them as DXF files, create solid models in SOLIDWORKS, and prepare your designs for printing using Bambu Studio.

This method is perfect for beginners, CAD enthusiasts, and makers who want to create personalized decorations, keychains, jewelry, ornaments, signs, and other creative 3D-printing projects.

Complete Image-to-3D Printing Workflow

The process follows a simple workflow:

Image → Inkscape → DXF → SOLIDWORKS → STL → Bambu Studio → 3D Print

By combining these tools, you can transform a flat image into a physical three-dimensional object without having to draw the entire design manually in CAD software.

Step 1: Choose a Suitable Image

Start by selecting an image or design you want to convert into a 3D-printable model.

For the best results, choose an image with:

  • Clear and recognizable outlines.
  • Good contrast between the design and background.
  • Simple shapes or silhouettes.
  • Minimal unnecessary details.
  • A clear front or top view.

Logos, decorative patterns, silhouettes, and geometric designs are particularly suitable for this workflow.

Step 2: Convert the Image into a Vector Using Inkscape

Import your selected image into Inkscape, a free and open-source vector graphics editor.

Use the image tracing tools to convert the raster image into editable vector paths.

Depending on your design, you may need to clean the traced outlines, remove unnecessary elements, and adjust the geometry.

Once the vector design is ready, export it as a DXF file.

DXF is a widely supported CAD format that allows you to transfer two-dimensional vector geometry into SOLIDWORKS.

Step 3: Import the DXF File into SOLIDWORKS

Open SOLIDWORKS and import the DXF file as a 2D sketch.

After importing, inspect the sketch carefully to ensure the geometry is suitable for creating a solid model.

You may need to:

  • Remove overlapping or unnecessary lines.
  • Fix gaps between sketch entities.
  • Connect disconnected segments.
  • Correct unwanted intersections.
  • Create a fully closed sketch profile.

A clean and properly connected sketch is important for successful extrusion.

Step 4: Convert the 2D Sketch into a 3D Model

Once the sketch is ready, use Extruded Boss/Base in SOLIDWORKS to add thickness to your design.

This converts the flat vector geometry into a solid three-dimensional object.

You can adjust the extrusion depth depending on the intended application.

For example, thin designs may be suitable for earrings or decorative ornaments, while thicker models can be used for keychains, signs, and other objects.

After completing the model, export it as an STL file.

Step 5: Prepare the Model in Bambu Studio

Import the STL file into Bambu Studio to prepare it for 3D printing.

At this stage, you can adjust the print settings according to your design and printer.

Depending on your model, you may want to configure:

  • Model size and orientation.
  • Layer height.
  • Wall settings.
  • Infill density.
  • Print speed.
  • Supports, if needed.
  • Other quality settings.

Once everything is ready, slice the model, check the print preview, and send it to your 3D printer.

What Can You Create with This Method?

This image-to-3D workflow can be used for many different creative projects, including:

  • Personalized keychains.
  • Custom earrings and pendants.
  • Decorative wall art.
  • 3D-printed ornaments.
  • Custom name signs.
  • Artistic silhouettes.
  • Geometric patterns.
  • Personalized gifts.
  • Simple logos and decorative designs.

The possibilities are almost endless!
